STORY: Carter has no recollection of his past and his memory has been wiped away. He has been assigned a rescue mission, which also involves the search for a cure for the pandemic that has almost destroyed Korea (North and South) after the mutation of a virus. It’s a mission that’s fraught with danger.
REVIEW: Apart from being an action film, 'Carter' is also a zombie film and talks about a deadly virus that has mutated and created a pandemic situation. 'Carter' is an out-and-out action film, which will give you an adrenaline rush at many points in the film. They are breathtaking and death-defying action sequences of the likes you have never seen before. But having said this, this remains the only redeeming feature of a film that has a wafer-thin story with jarring camera movements that are bound to give your head a tailspin. It’s apparent that the cut that has been there on the streaming platform looks more like a rough cut of the film and not the final product. The ‘cuts’ between the sequences look haphazard and, in the end, take a toll on the film.
This Korean-English film is about Carter, who has no recollection of his past as his memory has been wiped away. He gets instructions from a mysterious female voice through a device that has been implanted in his ear. The events in the film happen in the wake of a deadly pandemic that has taken a toll on both North and South Korea. Carter is assigned a rescue mission to save a girl who, after having survived the impact of the deadly mutated virus, has antigens in her blood that could be used as an antidote.
Carter would have been hugely entertaining only if all the departments had been in sync with each other. The entire film appears as ‘one long take.' Four action sequences – inside a gymnasium, on a train, and in a moving van - that appear in the film stand apart and it’s great fun watching those sequences. But it’s just those sequences that are able to grab your attention, but the rest of the film leaves no impact. Joo Won, as Carter, defies every possible law of physics in the film, and there are times when the film appears as a cinematic version of a violent comic book. There is so much blood and gore in the film that it’s guaranteed to turn you off. Thankfully, the blood is all computer generated and thus the final outcome is a guffaw.
Carter is definitely a lost opportunity. If only the film had an average direction and proper editing, the fun would have been so much more. The only thing one can take away from the film is that it might just teach Akshay Kumar a trick or two while performing action scenes on top of a moving helicopter.
